Valencia hires Alex Mumbru as head coach

Valencia Basket hired former Spanish international Alex Mumbru as head coach, the team announced Tuesday. Mumbru will replace Joan Penarroya, who left for EuroLeague side Baskonia this offseason.

Mumbru, 42, recently parted ways with Bilbao after serving as the head coach for the past four years. His deal with Spanish powerhouse is for three-years as the team announced Tuesday.

Mumbrú took charge of the Bilbao team immediately after his retirement to achieve promotion from the LEB Oro in his first year, and later led the team in the Liga Endesa for the last three seasons.

Mumbru left Bilbao after 13 years, including nine seasons as a player. The club retired his No. 15 jersey after the end of his playing career. Mumbru was also part of the Spain NT until 2013 earning three EuroBasket top-3 places, one Olympic medal and a first-place in the FIBA Basketball World Cup back in 2006.

Bilbao finished with a 16-18 record last season, just a few wins away from a playoff seed in the 2021-22 postseason. Valencia has already begun planning for next season, retaining guard Klemen Prepelic and parting ways with veteran big Mike Tobey.
