Houston Rockets forward/center Usman Garuba made himself available to Sergio Scariolo and the Spanish NT ahead of the 2022 FIBA EuroBasket. EuroBasket will be held in September in several European countries.
“I want to go to the EuroBasket and I’m available to Sergio Scariolo,” Garuba said in an interview with AS (h/t Eurohoops). “We are Spain and Spain always competes. We want to fight for the medals despite the circumstances, despite the absences. We are ready for everything.”
Garuba had a limited role during his rookie season in the NBA with the Houston Rockets. He appeared in 24 games, averaging 2.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per contest. EuroBasket will be Garuba’s second appearance in a competition with the senior national team.
He was also part of the team during the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Spain won the bronze medal in the 2017 edition of the EuroBasket. This season’s competition was initially set to take place in 2021, but it was postponed due to COVID.
Garuba was a huge part of the Spain success youth level prior to finding a role in Real Madrid last season and get draft by the Houston Rockets in the 2021 NBA Draft. The 20-year-old big won the gold medal in the U18 European Championship of 2019.
He was also named an MVP during the gold medal run in the European Championship. The Spanish bigman also has the 2016 U16 European Championship while also claiming the silver in the 2018 U16 European Championship.
