Tornike Shengelia parts ways with CSKA Moscow; signs with Virtus Bologna

Tornike Shengelia has officially parted ways with CSKA Moscow, the Russian club announced on Monday.

Shengelia decided to leave the team after Russia’s invasion to Ukraine. As a result, the two sides mutually agreed to terminate their contract.

“When inviting Toko to the team, we counted on his fighting spirit, charisma, leadership qualities on and off the court. And it fully met our expectations,” CSKA Moscow president Andrey Vatutin told the club’s official website.

“I want to thank the CSKA organization for their work and attitude towards me, head coach Dimitris Itoudis, the coaching staff and everyone at the club.

It’s a pity that the reason for my departure is not related to basketball, but in life you have to make a choice, and I made it,” Tornike Shengelia said.

The Georgian forward has now signed with Virtus Bologna for the remainder of the season. He becomes the second CSKA player to join the Italians after Daniel Hackett.

Tornike Shengelia returns to EuroCup for the first time since 2010. Virtus is a prime candidate to play in the EuroLeague next season.

The veteran forward appeared in 15 EuroLeague games with CSKA Moscow this season. He averaged 12.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.5 assists.
