Sue Bird played her final game in Connecticut in front of a sellout crowd that included many fans wearing Sue Bird and UConn gear. The WNBA legend received a standing ovation twice during the pregame ceremony and another during player introductions.
She appeared emotional in what was proclaimed to be the official “Sue Bird Day” in Connecticut. The 41-year-old star finished with 14 points and seven assists for the Storm as Seattle lost to the Sun Friday night.
“A lot of times as a UConn player, I feel like the fans look at us like family,” she said. “And they stay with us through our careers. That’s something that I treasure, something I’ve really enjoyed every time I came back here.
So, tonight was a perfect way to end that. I would have preferred a win, but I’ll take it.”
Bird played 30 miles north at UConn from 1998-2002, leading the Huskies to two of the program’s 11 NCAA championships. The Storm started four former UConn players in Bird, Stewart, Williams and Tina Charles.
Earlier this season, the WNBA legend announced her decision to retire from the game. A 1e-time All-Star and an eight-time All-WNBA selection, she not only left her mark in Connecticut but also in the WNBA and the women’s sports in general.
