Saint Peter’s causes upset; becomes first 15-seed to reach Elite 8

Saint Peter’s became the biggest cinderella story in the history of March Madness with the win over NCAA powerhouse Purdue.

Saint Peter’s overcame Purdue star Trevion Williams’ 16 points and eight rebounds. The Peacocks once again applied their aggressive defense and forced 15 turnovers before outshooting the Boilermakers (29-8) down the stretch.

Doug Eder made the game-clinching free throws with 4.0 seconds. Chris Rupert scored all of his 11 points in front of a frenetic crowd at Wells Fargo Arena. Saint Peter’s will face another great program next round playing No. 8 North Carolina, which defeated No 4. UCLA later.

In another big game of Elite 16, Miami overcame Iowa State 70-56 to make its first Elite 8 appearance in the history of the program. The Hurricanes will face top-seeded Kansas on Sunday afternoon next round.

After outlasting USC 68-66 in the first round, Miami dominated Auburn and Iowa State. After a balanced first half, where  McGusty, Waardenburg and Jordan Miller scored all Miami’s 32 points, Jim Larrañaga’s team finished strong in the second half.

The Hurricanes remained poised in the second half to close the game in the last 10 minutes. Kameron McGusty lead all scorers with 27 points for the winning side.

In the other two matchups, Kansas outlasted Providence 61-66 to make it to the Final 8, while North Carolina put together a great performance to prevail 73-66 over UCLA.
