Real Madrid, Zalgiris to honor Jonas Maciulis in EuroLeague Round 27 game

Zalgiris Kaunas and Real Madrid will honor retired forward Jonas Maciulis on Thursday’s EuroLeague Round 27 clash, the Lithuanian club announced Wednesday.

Maciulis retired from basketball last September after an illustrious career in the European basketball stage. He has a total of 239 games in the EuroLeague with career averages of 7.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 1.0 steal per contest.

Maciulis played in Madrid for four seasons, capturing the EuroLeague title in 2015. Besides Real and Zalgiris, the Lithuanian forward played also for Siena, Olimpia Milano, Panathinaikos, Lokomotiv Kuban, and AEK Athens, adding multiple domestic titles to his resume.

This season, Zalgiris stands at 4-17 in the EuroLeague after 21 games. He will face Real in Kaunas on Thursday, with the Spanish giants hoping to bounce back from a domestic cup final loss to rivals FC Barcelona.

The “Whites” are tied with FC Barcelona on the top of the 2021-22 EuroLeague standings at 20-5. Zalgiris is 7.5 games behind the eighth seed with 11 fixtures left on the schedule. As for Madrid, they are among the favorites to win the EuroLeague title this season.

After the game in Kaunas, Pablo Laso’s team will travel to Russia next Friday to face CSKA Moscow in a classic EuroLeague matchup. Zalgiris will face German Cup holders ALBA Berlin for EuroLeague Round 28.
