Real Madrid officially parts ways with head coach Pablo Laso

Real Madrid has officially parted ways with head coach Pablo Laso after 11 years, the Spanish club announced Monday.

The EuroLeague powerhouse wanted to keep Laso out for one year and not take any risk with his health, after the latter suffered a heart attack on June 5.

The Spanish coach informed the club that he wanted to return to the bench and had no plans whatsoever to sit out the season. However, the club made its decision based only on medical reasons.

After making the departure of Pablo Laso official, Real Madrid will promote Chus Mateo (Laso’s assistant) to the head coach position for next season.

Laso spent 11 seasons with Real Madrid, winning two EuroLeague championships (2015, 2018), six Spanish ACB championships (2013, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2022), six Spanish Cups (2012, 2014 – 2017, 2020) and six Spanish SuperCup titles (2012, 2013, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2020).

Last season, he led Real to the EuroLeague Championship Game and claimed the ACB title, while losing the Copa Del Rey.
