Panathinaikos offered a win to its fans in its final home game for the 2021-22 EuroLeague as the Greens downed Real Madrid 87-86. The Greek giants won their first game in four years vs Madrid.
Panathinaikos had the lead for most of the game and secured its 8th win in the competition in a more convincing manner than the score indicates. The Greens left the bottom of the standings after their win.
The home side made a strong start to take a 22-9 lead in the first quarter. Panathinaikos kept the lead closer to double digits (41-32) at halftime. Real Madrid made a comeback effort in the third quarter with a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to two (56-54).
The Greens kept their composure and ran away with the win after a 7-0 run amidst the fourth quarter to take a 76-63 lead. Real Madrid tried to come back again, but the Spaniards’ return never completed.
Real holds an 18-9 record and is tied with Olimpia Milano and Olympiacos in the third place, while Panathinaikos improved to 8-18.
Key of the Game: Panathinaikos made a crucial run in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. The home side only had five turnovers in 40 minutes of play.
MVP: Georgios Papagiannis dominated the “Los Blancos” frontline with 18 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks.
Panathinaikos will face ALBA Berlin on April 6 in a EuroLeague Round 19 makeup game. Two days later (April 8), they will play Fenerbahce on the road in their final regular season game.
Real Madrid will face Bayern Munich at home for the final game of the EuroLeague regular season.
