Olympiacos Blog: Alec Peters joins the “Reds” to bring elite 3-point shooting

Alec Peters was the third signing of Olympiacos this offseason following the “Reds” deals with Joel Bolomboy and Isaiah Canaan.

The American power forward signed a two-year contract with Olympiacos and will remain with the “Reds” until the summer of 2024.

The Greek giants will be the fourth EuroLeague team Peters will play for, following stints with CSKA Moscow, Anadolu Efes and Baskonia.

The 27-year-old big man joined the three-time EuroLeague champions as a replacement of captain Giorgos Printezis and Livio Jean-Charles. Printezis officially retired at the end of the season, while Jean-Charles inked a two-year deal with CSKA.

With that in mind, what will the newly-acquired power forward bring to Olympiacos on both ends of the floor?

First of all, Alec Peters is a EuroLeague champion with CSKA Moscow (2019), with four years of EuroLeague experience under his belt (2018-2022).

This is one of the main reasons for his arrival in Piraeus, as head coach Giorgos Bartzokas is fond of players with EuroLeague experience.

Offensively, Peters looks like a great addition to the roster. He is a terrific shooter from all over the floor, averaging 39.1% from beyond the arc last season.

He also has EuroLeague career averages of 43.2% in three-point shooting, while being an impressive free-throw shooter as well, with career averages of 88.7% (110/124).

His quick release and ability to score either off the dribble or off of screens will help Olympiacos stretch the floor and maintain spacing for almost the entire game.

Alec Peters is excellent at using screens to make mid-range jumpers. We are going to see him in pick-n-pop situations, where he will try to exploit his solid scoring skills.

Despite being a decent low-post scorer, he mainly scores off of fadeaway jumpers unless guarded by smaller defenders, where he can also score inside the paint.

Alec Peters is a smart player with a great feel for the game, which allows him to take advantage of his opponent’s weakness and score. He is also excellent in transition both as a trailer and in catch-and-shoot situations.

Defensively, his fit to the team’s tactics will determine how successful his stint with the “Reds” will be. Olympiacos is a defense-first team, so embracing the club’s defensive mindset will be crucial.

Alec Peters is an average athlete and struggles to guard smaller and quicker opponents. The lack of elite athletic ability prevents him from being physical and that can cost him in low-post defense and 1-on-1 situations.

As we said, he is a smart player with a great feel for the game and that makes him valuable as an off-ball defender. Because of his average defensive skills, though, he will certainly need to play alongside great on-ball defenders while on the floor.

Alec Peters will come off the bench for Olympiacos and will be part of the “Reds” second unit. His playing skills make him a great complement to star power forward Sasha Vezenkov offensively, while improving his defense will be key for his success.

Overall, his elite three-point shooting and his offensive repertoire show that he will be an upgrade to the power forward position if healthy, as he has missed time with injuries during his career.
