Philadelphia 76ers superstar Joel Embiid is reportedly close to obtain the French nationality, according to RMC Sport. The Philadelphia 76ers player may finally get the chance to play for the French national team. Embiid was the NBA’s top scorer during the 2021-22 regular season.
According to the same report, a visit to France is planned by the end of June to finalize the paperwork. NBA big man could join forces with Nicolas Batum, Rudy Gobert, and Evan Fournier in the French NT.
In basketball, FIBA regulations allow only one naturalized player per national team. If Embiid, who has family in France, obtains his naturalization, he will therefore be able to play.
At the time general manager of the French Basketball Federation, Patrick Beesley had declared that the arrival of the native of Yaoundé in the France team was possible several France basketball stars like Tony Parker opposed to the idea.
It’s unclear how Embiid could be paired with Rudy Gobert in the French NT front-line. He will become a valuable member of a star-studded team consisted of Evan Fournier and Nicolas Batum.
During the 2021-22 NBA regular season, Embiid averaged a league-leading 30.6 points and 11.4 boards for the Philadelphia 76ers.
