FC Barcelona remains on top in Calathes’ historic night

FC Barcelona rallied past Monaco at “Palau Blaugrana” (88-83) in a night where Nick Calathes set a new EuroLeague record.

Calathes became the all-time assist leader in the competition, surpassing Vassilis Spanoulis (1,607) and finishing the game with 1,612.

In the game, the Catalans took control in the third quarter and led by as many as 16 (57-41). But, Monaco came back and tied the game early in the fourth (66-66).

Eventually, the hosts survived the late thriller (70-71, 78-78), thanks to some clutch plays by Brandon Davies and Dante Exum.

FC Barcelona extended its EuroLeague winning streak to five games and improved to 21-5. They remained on top of the standings and are close to clinching their place in the postseason and the home-court advantage.

For their part, the visitors dropped to 14-14, but kept their playoff chances alive. Monaco has a 6-3 record in its last nine games and is fighting for a place in the postseason in its inaugural EuroLeague season.

Next week, Monaco will host reigning champions Anadolu Efes in a must-win game for both sides. The Turks swept the season series over rivals Fenerbahce earlier tonight and maintained a playoff push.

For its part, FC Barcelona travels to Kaunas to face Zalgiris Kaunas on Friday night (March 11).
