EuroLeague rumors: Victor Wembanyama considering leaving ASVEL

Victor Wembanyama is considering leaving LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne this summer, per Yann Ohnona of L’Equipe. Wembanyama has an option to opt out of his current deal, which runs for two more years.

The projected NBA Draft prospect has an option to opt out of his deal until 26 of June. Potentially activating the exit clause can be combined with a move to Paris, which prepares for the second season in the LNB Pro A, per Ohnona.

Widely projected to be the 1st overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Wembanyama could benefit from more playing time entering the 2022-23 season. The French forward/big faced several issues throughout the season, and he will miss the rest of the Pro A playoffs with injury.

In his first season in the highest level of European basketball, Wembanyama averaged 6.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.9 blocks, 0.5 assists, and 0.4 steals per in 15 EuroLeague appearances.

He registered 8.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game in his second season in LNB Pro A. The previous year, he played for Nanterre 92 and appeared in seven EuroCup games.

In other offseason rumors, Baskonia is searching for one more point guard, as the team’s sports director Felix Fernandez admitted Wednesday (h/t BasketNews). The Spanish club parted ways with veteran guard Jayson Granger Tuesday.

Fernandez also revealed the club is in talks with guard Wade Baldwin IV for a new contract. Baldwin’s current deal is coming to an end this offseason after joining Baskonia last summer.

Baldwin averaged 13.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.3 assists being one of the few bright spots in Baskonia’s 2021-22 EuroLeague season. Prior to Baskonia, the 26-year-old guard played for Olympiacos and Bayern Munich.
