EuroLeague Diaries: Nick Calathes of FC Barcelona makes history in round 28 victory

FC Barcelona star point guard Nick Calathes set an incredible milestone during the FC Barcelona 88-83 victory over AS Monaco in EuroLeague round 28.

The veteran guard became the all-time assist leader in the competition after he surpassed EuroLeague legend Vassilis Spanoulis (1,607). After the game, Calathes had 1,612 assists under his name.

Being a part of several great teams throughout his career, Calathes accomplished the feat in 269 games, which is 89 fewer than it took Spanoulis.

The FC Barcelona guard is averaging 5.4 assists per game this season. He has the leading all-time average with 6.0 assists per through 269 EuroLeague games so far.

“I have been very blessed to have the coaches I have had and the teammates that I have had, so it goes to them, also, for making the game easy for me on the court. Obviously, it is a great honor and I am happy,” Calathes said Thursday night.

Calathes started his EuroLeague career with Panathinaikos (2009-2012) playing alongside legendary guards like his current head coach Sarunas Jasikevicius and Dimitris Diamantidis, one of the best two-way guards in the history of the competition.

He played in Russia for Lokomotiv Kuban during the 2012-13 season, before making the jump to the NBA, where he backed up Mike Conley in the “Grit n’Grind” Memphis Grizzlies.

After two seasons (2013-2015) in the NBA he returned to Europe and played for Panathinaikos again. He had five successful seasons there, before joining FC Barcelona in 2020.

He already reached to a EuroLeague Final with the Spanish giants and he’s hoping he will win the title this season.

The Catalans are leading the regular season standings at 21-5. After their win against Mike James and Monaco, they are on a five-game winning streak.
