EuroBasket Blog: Top-5 point guards that will play in the tournament

With the 2022 FIBA EuroBasket almost a month away, we present the Top-5 point guards that will play in the tournament.

Here you can also read the 3 NBA superstars that are expected to headline the tournament in September (1-18).

Luka Doncic (Slovenia)

The superstar of the Dallas Mavericks has his sights set on leading Slovenia to its second straight EuroBasket title. The Slovenians have one of the best teams in the competition and focus on successfully defending the title they won in 2017.

Doncic is coming off another stellar season in the NBA, averaging 28.4 points, 9.1 boards and 8.7 assists and helping the Mavs reach the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2011.

Slovenia is among the favorites to go all the way in the EuroBasket, especially if Goran Dragic joins the team and reunites with Luka Doncic.

Vasilije Micic (Serbia)

The superstar guard of Anadolu Efes is expected to steal the spotlight in the EuroBasket. Along with Nikola Jokic, they headline a Serbia team that wants to return to the top, following its elimination from the Olympic Games last summer.

The back-to-back EuroLeague Final Four MVP had another impressive season and led the Turks to their second straight EuroLeague title.

His all-around performance and excellent scoring and passing skills will be key for the Serbians, who are among the favorites for the gold medal.

Vasilije Micic, who won this season’s Alphonso Ford Top Scorer Trophy award, led the EuroLeague in scoring in both the regular season (18.1 ppg.) and the playoffs (18.5 ppg.).

He scored 20 or more points in exactly half of his 32 appearances this season and also finished sixth in assists (4.6 apg.) and seventh in average performance index rating (17.5 per game).

Shane Larkin (Turkey)

Shane Larkin will play for Turkey in the 2022 FIBA EuroBasket as a naturalized player. His explosive playing style will be key for the Turks, who want to reach the knockout stage and go as far as they can in the competition.

Head coach Ergin Ataman knows how to take advantage of Larkin’s scoring skills, as the two are members of an Efes team that has dominated the EuroLeague since 2019.

With several NBA players headlining Turkey’s roster, Shane Larkin will be a game changer and his performance will be key for the national team’s success in the EuroBasket.

Shane Larkin was everywhere for Efes last season, ranking fourth overall in assists (5.3), sixth in scoring (14.6) and seventh in steals (1.3).

Dennis Schroder (Germany)

Dennis Schroder is another NBA player that will compete in the 2022 FIBA EuroBasket. The star guard headlines Germany’s roster and is the hosts’ best hope for a deep run in the tournament.

The free agent guard was unstoppable in the recent Basketball World Cup Qualifiers, scoring 14 and 38 points (European Qualifiers record) in Germany’s games vs Estonia and Poland, respectively.

Dennis Schroder averaged 13.5 points and 4.6 assists in the NBA last season, spending the year between the Boston Celtics and Houston Rockets.

Kostas Sloukas (Greece)

Like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kostas Sloukas returns to a major FIBA tournament with Greece after the 2019 Basketball World Cup, following the Greeks’ elimination from the Olympic Games last year.

The star guard of Olympiacos was impressive in the EuroLeague last season, averaging a career-high 11.9 points and being a part of the All-EuroLeague Second Team, as the “Reds” returned to the Final Four after five years.

Sloukas will be the focal point on offense, along with the “Greek Freak”, and his performance will be key for the Greeks’ chances to return to the top of Europe.
