ELPA says safety has to be number one priority

The EuroLeague Players Association reacted to the continuity of the competition, stating that players safety should be the no.1 priority for the teams. The statement was released regarding the potential of discussing any necessary actions in the wake of the war in Ukraine.

“In the light of unprecedented events in Ukraine and the upcoming EuroLeague and clubs’ meeting, we insist that any decisions made about the continuation and regularity of the competition are done with players, coaches, club personnel and referees safety in mind as an absolute number one priority.

We realize the complexity of the situation, but trust that correct decisions will be made. We continue to offer our utmost support to players individually and collectively as the situation develops over the next hours, days and weeks.”

All three regular season games of Round 27 involving Russian teams were postponed for safety reasons. Zalgiris Kaunas made known that the team will boycott all games in Russian soil for the rest of the season.

FC Barcelona elected not to travel to Russia for now as the contest against Zenit was officially suspended, while the same could be the case for Sunday’s matchup vs. CSKA.
