Anadolu Efes appeared ready for postseason action as the reigning champion prevailed 48-64 over Olimpia Milano to make the 1-0 in the EuroLeague playoff series. Efes put up a defensive masterclass in Milan and dominate the game for three quarters to get the win.
Ergin Ataman’s group allowed 18 points in the second and third quarter to lead 34-46 entering the final quarter of the game. Milan could not find a way to an efficient offensive play as Bryant Dunston, who had nine points and six rebounds.
In the offensive end, Efes dominate the game with Shane Larkin and Vaslije Micic having a great night as a duo creating opportunities for themselves and his teammates. Micic played his first game since March 22.
Micic finished the contest also with 16 points and seven rebounds. Both EuroLeague stars hit several big shots in the second half to keep the visitors ahead. Micic and Larkin combined for a PIR of 28.
Milan shot just 33.3% on two-pointers, while they just made 8 of their 28 attempts from beyond the arc. They also had 15 turnovers and six missed free throws. Efes suffocating defense was the key for Ergin Ataman and co.
The 48 points marked the fewest scored by a home team in a playoff game, besting the previous record mark of 53 by Montepaschi Siena in a 2009 game against Panathinaikos Athens.
MVP: Shane Larkin was crucial to his team’s offensive plan. He led Efes in scoring with 16 points, while he had five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a PIR of 15.
The two teams will face each other again Thursday for Game 2 of the series in Mediolanum Forum.
