Daniel Hackett leaves CSKA Moscow; Virtus Bologna might be interested

Daniel Hackett became the sixth player to leave Russia and CSKA Moscow, the team announced Wednesday.

Tornike Shengelia, Iffe Lundberg, Marius Grigonis, Johannes Voigtmann and Joel Bolomboy have also been allowed to leave the team for safety reasons after the Russian invasion in Ukraine.

As all the above, Hackett has not yet been released from the team. He is under contract for one more year with the EuroLeague giants. EuroLeague decided to suspend all three Russian clubs from the competition because of the situation in Ukraine.

Besides these departures, the rest of CSKA team members are preparing for the upcoming games in the VTB League.

Philip Gafurov, Alexander Evseev, Vladimir Karpenko, Ivan Pynko, Yuri Umrikhin and Dmitry Khalturin will be brought from CSKA-2 to cover for the absences.

As for Hackett, there are several reports that suggest Virtus Bologna could be interested in adding him to its squad. Virtus CEO Luca Baraldi revealed the Italian club has reached an agreement with Hackett (h/t to Basketnews.com).

“We have an agreement with Hacket,”, Baraldi said during the presentation of the project ‘Virtus Care’. “Now we’re waiting that CSKA will set him free. There’s not a lot of time because the new players have to arrive by March 8 if we want to use them in EuroCup.”

This season, Hackett averaged 8.5 points, 1.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 9.0 PIR through 22 EuroLeague games. As the season progress, several other CSKA players that left the team could draw interest from other European clubs.
