CSKA Moscow confirms departure of four players amid Russia-Ukraine war

CSKA Moscow released a statement on Sunday, confirming the departure of four players, amid Russia-Ukraine war.

The Muscovites noted Marius Grigonis, Tornike Shengelia, Iffe Lundberg and Johannes Voigtmann have left the squad.

“For personal reasons related to the current situation between Russia and Ukraine, as well as its possible consequences, Tornike Shengelia and Iffe Lundberg left the location of CSKA.

In the near future, Marius Grigonis and Johannes Voigtmann will also go to their homeland. The actions of the players are a violation of the terms of the contract and club regulations.

But, the club treats the personal situation of each of the players with understanding. The status of player agreements will be resolved when the political and sports situation in Europe returns to normal.

All other basketball players and coaches continue to prepare for the upcoming games accordingly to the usual schedule.

The club monitors the development of the situation, focusing on the decisions of government organizations and tournaments in which the team takes part,” CSKA management said in a statement.

On Friday, the Muscovites will host Real Madrid. The game will take place in a neutral venue, after the decision of the EuroLeague. On Monday, the competition is expected to announce the city that will host the three Russian teams.

CSKA (14-10) hasn’t played a EuroLeague game since February 10. The EuroLeague postponed the Russians’ games vs Bayern Munich (February 24) and FC Barcelona (February 27).
