Crvena Zvezda downed Baskonia 86-83 after a late thriller, that went down to the wire. Zvezda took an 80-72 lead after a triple from Nate Wolters.
Baskonia made a late run to cut the lead to 84-81, but Austin Hollins’ breakaway dunk seal the deal for the home side.
Earlier in the game, Baskonia had a strong starting quarter as the Spanish club took a 13-26 lead at the end of the first quarter. Zvezda was able to answer in the second quarter, and both teams closed the game tied at 41 points apiece.
Nate Wolters had 17 points and several huge plays in crunch time, while Luka Mitrovic led the winners with 18 points. As for Baskonia, Simone Fontecchio had a game-high 19 points and Wade Baldwin followed with 19.
During the fourth quarter, the “Reds” boost the margin to nine points at some point, but Baskonia found a way to keep the game close. However, at the end, Zvezda claim the victory and improved to 11-15. Baskonia has dropped to 7-19.
The Serbian team kept their playoffs hopes alive, considering that the three Russians clubs—all playoff-bound teams—could be suspended for the season.
Key of the game: Zvezda committed just eight turnovers in 40 minutes of play. The visitors had six more with 14.
Baskonia will continue on the road next week, facing LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne for round 29 of the EuroLeague. Crvena Zvezda will host Maccabi Tel Aviv on Thursday.
