Baskonia sets to sign NBL star Yanni Wetzell

Baskonia is expected to sign NBL and New Zealand Breakers star Yanni Wetzell. The Breakers announced that they agreed to part ways with the dynamic bigman.

The 25-year-old Wetzell has enjoyed a stellar season with the Breakers, averaging 17.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. This will be the first time making the jump and playing in the European basketball scene.

In 20 games this season with the Breakers, Wetzell had some great performances, including a 17-point and 18-rebound game vs Perth.

Wetzell highlighted his ambition to play at the EuroLeague level. Wetzell began his NBL career with the South East Melbourne Phoenix last season coming off a college career that ended at San Diego State University.

The New Zealander was one of the best young bigs in the NBL league in the almost two season he remained with the Breakers.

“The opportunity to play in the EuroLeague has been a goal of mine since I was at school; it has just come earlier than I expected,” he said.

With Baskonia being eliminated from the EuroLeague postseason, the dynamic center will hope to help his new team to achieve its goals in the ACB.

Following a breakout #NBL22 season, the @NZBreakers and Yanni Wetzell have agreed to a release from the remainder of his contract. Wetzell is set to join Spanish EuroLeague outfit Baskonia with DP Sam Timmins elevated to the roster. Details ➡️ https://t.co/KNOBKgveN1 pic.twitter.com/FKcMp5XoyZ — The NBL (@NBL) April 15, 2022
