AS Monaco ends Baskonia’s playoff hopes; gets key victory at home

AS Monaco gets closer and closer to its first appearance in the EuroLeague playoffs after the 78-68 win over Baskonia.

The Roca put a dent in Baskonia’s hopes to make the postseason thanks to a dominant second quarter. The Pro A team led by a double-digit margin for the most part of the game and got the decisive victory to improve to 13-13.

The home side took a 42-32 lead in the first half to grab a 57–36 advantage with four minutes to play in the third quarter. Baskonia answered with its own run to cut the lead to seven (69-62) halfway through the fourth quarter.

Monaco reacted and made a 9-0 run heading in the last few minutes of the game to run away with the victory. Sasa Obradovic’s group remained in the Top-8 of the standings with two games to play. Baskonia has officially ruled out from the playoff race after the loss.

Will Thomas scored a team-high 16 points for Monaco. Dwayne Bacon had 14 points, Alpha Diallo finished with 10 points and nine rebounds for the winning side. Baskonia was led by Alec Peters with 15 points and seven rebounds.

Key of the game: Monaco only committed five turnovers shooting 58 percent in 2-point field goal.

MVP: Alpha Diallo had an all-around performance of 10 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals for a PIR of 19.

That was the second consecutive win for Monaco, which put a stop to Baskonia’s three-game winning streak. Baskonia dropped to 11-16.
